Education System in Kiribati - An Overview
The Republic of Kiribati is a country in Central Tropical Pacific Ocean and comes within the Commonwealth of Nations. Kiribati is an island nation located in the Central tropical Pacific Ocean southwest of Hawaii. The Capital of Kiribati is Tarawa. Bairiki is an island of Tarawa and serves as an administrative center. From April to October, Kiribati experiences a pleasant climate, with northeastern winds and stable temperature. From November to March, it experiences Western Gales that causes rains and few hurricanes.
The constitution of Kiribati makes education compulsory to children between the ages of 6 and 15 years. Primary education is provided into grades 1 to 6. and the Junior Secondary School (JSS) provides education in grades 7 to 9. Pupils after passing JSS join secondary schools.
Kiribati joined UNESCO on 24 October 1989. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office in Apia, Samoa. As of September 2006, Kiribati has 14 schools participating in UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).
